Make Film-Style Videos With Runway ML Prompts

Runway ML can turn text into video that looks like real film. In this post I share prompt words and small tricks I learned to get smooth, movie-like clips.

Why I Love Runway ML for Video

I make short videos for fun and work. Before, I need camera, actors, and lot of time. Now Runway ML help me make video from just text. It is not perfect. But when prompt is good, result look like real film.

In this post I share what I learn. These are prompt words and small tricks that give me better clips. I keep it simple so you can start today.

Start With a Clear Scene

Many people write short prompt and hope for magic. This is mistake. Runway need to know what you want. Give it clear scene.

Think about three things first:

  • What is in the shot
  • Where it happen
  • What time or mood it is

Example: "A woman walking on empty beach at sunset, soft golden light." This is clear. Runway know the subject, the place, and the light.

When I add more small details, video get better. But do not write too much. Too many words confuse the model. Keep it focused.

Use Camera Words

This is the trick that change everything for me. Film look come from camera. So I tell Runway what camera to use.

Some camera words I use often:

  • Slow dolly in
  • Wide shot
  • Close up
  • Aerial drone view
  • Tracking shot following subject
  • Handheld camera

Example: "Slow dolly in on old man reading book by window, warm light." The word "slow dolly in" make the camera move gentle. This give cinematic feel right away.

I found that camera motion matter more than people think. Even simple scene look pro when camera move nice.

Add Light and Mood

Light is heart of any film. In my experience, Runway respond very well to light words.

Try these:

  • Golden hour light
  • Soft morning light
  • Moody blue tones
  • Neon city lights at night
  • Harsh shadows, high contrast

Example: "Rainy street at night, neon signs, reflection on wet ground, moody blue tones." This prompt give dark and cool video. Very film-like.

Mood words also help. Words like "calm", "tense", "dreamy", or "lonely" push the video in right feeling. AI understand mood better than I expect.

Say the Film Style

You can name a film style. This is fast way to get look you want.

Some styles I try:

  • Cinematic, shot on film
  • 35mm film look
  • Documentary style
  • Vintage retro film grain
  • Sci-fi movie style

Example: "Cinematic shot of desert road, car driving away, 35mm film look, dust in air." The words "35mm film look" add grain and warm color. It feel like old movie.

Be careful with too many style words. Pick one or two. If you mix too much, video look messy.

Keep Motion Simple

Runway is good but not magic. Fast and crazy motion often break the video. Faces melt. Objects change shape.

So I keep motion slow and simple. One action per clip.

Good: "Man slowly turning his head to look at camera."

Bad: "Man running, jumping, then dancing while cars crash behind."

The second one is too much. Runway can not handle it well. When I split action into small clips, each one look clean. Then I join them later in editor.

My Simple Prompt Formula

After many tries, I use this order for my prompts:

1. Subject and action

2. Location

3. Camera movement

4. Light and mood

5. Film style

Example using all: "A lone traveler walking through foggy forest, tracking shot from behind, soft morning light, mysterious mood, cinematic film look."

This give me strong result almost every time. You can change the order. But this flow work good for me.

Small Tricks That Help

Here are extra things I learn:

  • Make many versions. First try is rarely best. I run same prompt three or four times.
  • Use short clips. Long video have more chance to break.
  • Fix the seed if Runway allow. This keep look same when you make small change.
  • Watch other people prompts. I learn a lot by copy and change good prompts.

Final Words

Runway ML is powerful tool. But the prompt is what make it shine. Clear scene, camera words, good light, and simple motion. These are the keys.

Do not give up if first video look bad. I make many ugly clips before good one. Practice make it easier. Try the formula above and change it for your own style.

Have fun making your film. The tools are here now. You just need to tell them what you see in your head.
