Why Structure Matters More Than You Think
When I started making AI art, my prompts were short. I typed things like "a dragon" or "a city at night". The results were okay. But not amazing.
Then I learned something simple. AI art is better when you build the prompt in parts. Each part tells the AI one thing. Together they make a strong picture.
In this post I share the parts I use every time. This works for Midjourney, DALL-E, Flux, and Stable Diffusion. The idea is the same for all.
Part 1: The Main Subject
Start with what you want to see. This is the most important part. Be clear here.
Don't just say "a woman". Say "a young woman with red curly hair wearing a green coat". More detail gives the AI more to work with.
I found that naming small things helps a lot. Age, clothes, hair, expression. These little words make big change.
Part 2: The Action or Pose
Now tell the AI what the subject is doing. Standing? Running? Sitting by a window?
Action makes the image feel alive. A person "looking over shoulder" is more interesting than a person "standing".
Example:
- "an old fisherman pulling a net from the sea"
- "a cat sleeping on a warm windowsill"
You can see the picture already, right? That is the goal.
Part 3: The Setting
Where is this happening? The background matters more than people think.
Describe the place. A dark forest. A busy market. A quiet beach at sunset. The setting gives your art mood and story.
I like to add small details to setting too. "A forest with fog and tall pine trees" is better than just "a forest". Small words, big effect.
Part 4: The Lighting
This one changed my art the most. Lighting is everything in a good image.
Here are lighting words I use often:
- golden hour light
- soft morning light
- dramatic shadows
- neon glow
- backlight
Same subject with different light looks like a totally new picture. Try it and you will see.
Part 5: The Style
Now tell the AI how it should look. Is it a photo? A painting? A cartoon?
You can name styles like:
- oil painting
- 3D render
- watercolor
- cinematic photo
- anime style
You can also name artists or art movements. But be careful. Some tools block certain names now. When that happens I just describe the look instead.
Part 6: The Camera and Detail Words
For photo-style art, camera words help a lot. They make images look real.
Words like:
- close-up shot
- wide angle
- shallow depth of field
- 85mm lens
- ultra detailed
I don't use all of them at once. Two or three is enough. Too many words can confuse the AI.
Putting It All Together
Now let me show a full prompt using all parts.
"A young woman with red curly hair wearing a green coat, standing on a rainy street at night, neon signs glowing behind her, cinematic photo, shallow depth of field, ultra detailed"
See how each part does one job? Subject, action, setting, lighting, style, detail. This is how you get stunning results.
When my image is not right, I don't delete the whole prompt. I just change one part. Maybe the light. Maybe the style. This saves time.
Small Tips I Learned
Here are extra things that helped me:
- Order matters. Put important words near the start.
- Don't write too long. AI can lose focus after many words.
- Use commas to split ideas. It keeps things clean.
- Test one change at a time. Then you learn what each word does.
In my experience, testing is the best teacher. Keep a note of prompts that work. Reuse the good parts later.
Final Thoughts
Stunning AI art is not luck. It is structure. When you build your prompt in clear parts, the AI understands you better.
Start with subject. Add action. Set the scene. Choose light. Pick a style. Add detail. That is the recipe.
You don't need fancy words. You need clear words in the right places. Try this next time you make art. I think you will be surprised how much better it looks.
Make many tests. Have fun with it. That is how I got better, and you will too.
