How to Write Runway ML Prompts for Movie-Like Shots

Runway ML can make video that looks like real film. But you need good prompts. I share what I learn to get cinematic shots that feel professional.

Why Prompts Matter in Runway ML

Runway ML makes video from text. You type words. It gives you moving pictures. Sounds simple, right?

But here is the truth. Bad prompt gives bad video. Good prompt gives video that looks like movie.

I spend many hours testing prompts in Runway. I make many mistakes. In this post I share what actually work.

Start With the Shot Type

Movies use camera language. Runway understand this language too.

So I always start my prompt with shot type. This tell the AI how close or far the camera is.

Some shot types you can use:

  • Wide shot — shows big scene and space
  • Close-up — shows face or small detail
  • Aerial shot — camera looks from sky
  • Tracking shot — camera follows the subject

Example: "Wide shot of empty desert at sunset."

This one line already feel more like film. The AI knows where to put the camera.

Add Camera Movement

Static video is boring. Real movies move the camera. This makes video feel alive.

Runway respond well to movement words. I found that adding motion make big difference.

Try these:

  • Slow push in
  • Camera pans left
  • Dolly zoom
  • Drone flying over

Example: "Slow push in on old man sitting by window, soft light."

The camera slowly move closer. This build feeling. It looks cinematic.

But one tip. Do not add too many movements. One clear movement is better than three. When I put too much, the video get messy.

Describe the Light

Light is very important in film. Good light make cheap scene look expensive.

I always tell Runway about the light. This is one of my best tips.

Words that work:

  • Golden hour
  • Soft morning light
  • Neon lights, night city
  • Moody shadows
  • Backlight, sun behind subject

Example: "Close-up of woman face, golden hour light, warm tones."

The light give mood. Warm light feel happy. Dark light feel scary. Choose based on your story.

Use the Right Mood Words

Cinematic video has feeling. You must say what feeling you want.

I add mood words at the end of my prompt. Small words but strong effect.

Examples:

  • Cinematic
  • Film grain
  • Dramatic
  • Dreamy
  • Moody atmosphere

Also you can name film style. Like "shot on 35mm film" or "anamorphic lens". These make video look more like real cinema.

Example: "Rainy street at night, neon signs, cinematic, film grain, shot on 35mm."

Keep the Scene Simple

This mistake I make many times. I write too much in one prompt.

I put many people, many actions, many objects. Then video look confusing. The AI get lost.

Now I keep scene simple. One subject. One action. One place.

Bad: "A man running while dog barks and cars pass and birds fly and it rains."

Good: "A man running down empty street, rain falling, slow motion."

The second one is clear. Runway can do it well.

My Prompt Formula

After much testing, I use simple formula. It help me every time.

[Shot type] + [subject and action] + [setting] + [light] + [mood/style]

Example using formula:

"Aerial shot of small boat on calm ocean, early morning light, dreamy, cinematic."

See how each part do a job? Shot type, subject, setting, light, mood. All together make strong video.

You can copy this formula and change the words. It work for many kinds of scene.

Small Tips From My Experience

Here some extra things I learn:

  • Keep clips short. Runway do better with short clips. Long clips lose quality.
  • Generate many times. First try is not always best. I run same prompt few times and pick best one.
  • Use image to video. Sometimes I make image first, then turn to video. This give me more control.
  • Slow motion look very cinematic. Add "slow motion" when it fit the mood.

Final Words

Cinematic video is not magic. It is just good choices. Camera, light, mood, and simple scene.

Runway ML is powerful tool. But it only as good as your prompt. When you learn to speak in film language, your video get much better.

Start small. Test one prompt. Change one word and see what happen. This is how I learn.

Soon you will make video that look like real movie. Just from few words. That still feel amazing to me.
