How to Write Prompts for Consistent AI Characters

Keeping the same AI character across many images is hard. In this post I share simple prompt tricks that helped me. You will learn how to lock the look and stop random changes.

Why Characters Keep Changing

When I first made AI images, my character never stayed the same. One image she had brown hair. Next image she had black hair. Same prompt, different face.

This was very frustrating. I wanted to tell a story with one person. But the AI gave me a new person every time.

After many tries, I learn some tricks. Now my characters stay much more consistent. Let me share what works for me.

Start With a Clear Description

The biggest problem is vague prompts. If you write "a woman", the AI can make anyone. You must be very specific.

Write down every detail. Hair color. Hair length. Eye color. Skin tone. Face shape. Age. Body type. Clothes.

Here is example of a strong character block:

"A 25 year old woman, long straight black hair, brown eyes, light tan skin, round face, small nose, wearing a red leather jacket and blue jeans."

The more details you give, the less freedom the AI has to change things. This is the base of everything.

Save Your Character Block

Once you write a good description, save it. I keep mine in a note file.

Every time I make new image, I copy this same block. I do not rewrite it. I do not change words.

Even small word changes can shift the look. "Slim woman" and "thin woman" can give different results. So keep the exact same words each time.

This one habit helped me a lot. Same words in, more similar person out.

Give Your Character a Name

This sounds strange but it works. Give your character a full name in the prompt.

Some AI tools remember names better. When I write "Maya, a young woman with...", the tool sometimes keeps her more stable.

It does not work every time. But it costs nothing to try. I add name at the start of my character block.

Keep Style Words the Same

The art style also changes the face. If you switch from "photo" to "digital art", your character will look different.

So pick one style and keep it. Same lighting words. Same camera words. Same art style.

For example, I always add "soft studio lighting, realistic photo, 50mm lens" to my prompts. This keeps the mood the same across all images.

When the style matches, the character feels like the same person.

Use Reference Images When You Can

Text alone has limits. The strongest way to lock a character is with an image reference.

Many tools now let you upload a reference. Midjourney has character reference feature. Some tools let you train on your own images.

When I give a reference image, the results are much better. The face stays close. The hair stays close.

So if your tool has this option, use it. Text plus image works better than text alone.

Change Only One Thing at a Time

When you want new pose or new scene, do not change the character block. Only change the action or background.

For example, keep the full character description. Then just add "sitting in a coffee shop" or "walking on a beach".

If you rewrite the whole prompt, you lose the character. But if you only add the new part, the person stays.

This is a simple rule. Lock the person, change the scene.

Test and Fix in Small Steps

Do not expect perfect on first try. I always test my character with a few images first.

Make five images. Look at them. What keeps changing? Maybe the hair is not staying. Maybe the eyes shift.

Then add more detail for that part. If hair changes, describe hair more. Add "hair parted on the left side".

Small fixes make big difference. Each round gets closer to what you want.

Seed Numbers Can Help

Some tools give a seed number for each image. The seed is like a starting point.

If you use the same seed with the same prompt, you get similar results. This helps keep faces stable.

Not all tools show seeds. But if yours does, save the seed of your best character image. Reuse it.

My Simple Checklist

Here is what I do every time:

  • Write a detailed character block with a name
  • Save the exact words and reuse them
  • Keep the same style and lighting words
  • Use a reference image if the tool allows
  • Only change the scene, never the character part

Final Thoughts

Consistent characters take some work. But it is not magic. It is mostly about repeating the same details.

Be specific. Save your words. Change only the scene. Use references when you can.

I struggled with this for long time. Now my characters stay much more stable. Try these tips and your story characters will finally look like one person.
